Changes coming to youth soccer in 2017

Some of you may have been told by your coach or read online that US Soccer has mandated a change to all youth soccer.  Our league has already started these changes when we switched over last fall to the birth year for team formation.  Now we are moving on to the second phase of this change, and we wanted to give you, as parents, more information on these changes, because they are going to affect the way games are played.

Teams and Field are getting smaller

This is being done to encourage every player to touch the ball more so your child can develop as a player. Under 12’s will now play 9v9, Under 10’s will now play 7v7, Under 8’s and Under 6’s will play 4v4.  Field sizes will be small at all ages U12 and under, you can see a complete list of the team and field size changes here

The biggest change to this is on the under 8’s field, the goalie has been removed, which will help players gain much needed confidence when it comes to goal scoring.  The games will also be played 4v4 with half the team playing on one field while the other half in playing on the field next to it.  We know this will be a big change for players that played under 8’s last year and we understand, but this change has been mandated and will benefit your child’s player development.  This is a step up from under 6’s as the fields will be lined and more emphasis will be made to teaching the rules of the game.
